“The Shield” (Knight, Beast, Nude Lady) Painting on masonite, signed, titled and dated 1978 verso. Rarely offered original fantasy painting by renown portrait, surrealist and sci-fi artist, Raymond A. Whyte (1923-2002).
Over the years, Whyte originals have become quite collectable, crossing over into both the sci-fi and fantasy genres. The subject matter here is off the charts with what at first glance appears to be a medieval scene, and then hits a surrealist sci-fi tone with the fantastic reptilian beast embattled against the mounted knight. The addition of the nude female bearing a heralded shield and skimpy thong in the distance, perfectly offsets this gloriously eccentric piece!
The ideal accent piece for a therapist waiting room or perhaps a security office at Walmart. The possibilities are endless!
Raymond A. Whyte can be found in the prestigious collections of Forbes, Getty, Orson Bean and the Debeers Museums. The overall condition is VG+ with minor wear, some normal separation in the original frame from age that does not affect the structure. The canvas has a nice patina . Very rare. Measures 24″ W x 20″ H.
